I’m still being really indecisive about what I’m going to do for a holiday this year. It seems however, that I’ve managed to sort out a holiday for 2020. It seems that I’ve talked myself into going to Disney World. “Why?” I hear you cry.
At my local friendly Sci-Fi and Fantasy group last weekend, I somehow managed to get myself involved in a conversation about the new Star Wars land that they are currently building at Hollywood Studios at Disney World. As it is generally known that I worked there for a while, I was asked to share my thoughts.
This then lead to me jokingly suggesting a field trip after it opens, and a rather serious discussion about how it would work. We’ve tentatively come to the decision that 2020 would be a good time to go. It gives us time to save some money, and if there are any issues then enough time to fix them.
Tentatively, Stars Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is going to be something like the Avatar land that opened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom last year. It is going to be a heavily themed land set in the Star Wars Universe, spearheaded by two attractions (rides). One will put guests in the middle of a battle between the Resistance and the First Order.
The second, and this is something that I’ve dreamed of doing, will put you in control of the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. Can I do the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs? I may be about to find out.
This is all on top of the already existing Star Tours which, if rumours are to be believed, will split into two sections. One for the original two trilogies and one for the new movies.
The part that I’m really excited about is something that they haven’t announced an opening date for. A Star Wars themed hotel. Best thing, the blurb mentions that it is going to be “100% immersive”. I know that it is blurb, but they mention dressing up. Can I bring my own costume? I need to go and buy a costume.
From the rumours/speculation that I’ve heard it may be opening in 2020 (woo hoo), but it is going to be really expensive. Like $1,000 per night and a max stay of two nights. Yikes! I’ve said this before, I’m an eejit, so I could be talked into it. Actually, just take all of my money already…
I do have one concern, not counting the obvious one asking if Disney can really pull it off. Ok, I’ve got two concerns. The second, is regarding resort hopping. What do I mean? Disney World can be quite intense, especially if you are staying onsite. So, a large amount of guests will book meals at other resorts to take a break from the parks. There is even a monorail pub crawl, or cupcake crawl if drinking isn’t your thing.
Anyway, how are they going to deal with the resort hoppers? Because, if I’m paying a rather large fortune per night, I’m probably not going to be leaving the hotel during my two nights there (Honestly, they’re probably going to use a crow bar to pry me out when my time is up), and neither will anyone else. Capacity issues at a hotel. That would be a first.
You can see that I am really excited, and that is without mentioning the Harry Potter stuff at Universal, NASA, or if it is early, The Guardians of the Galaxy ride at Epcot. Sci-Fi and theme parks, my two favourite things together.
Now I need to figure out where I want to go THIS YEAR.
