This is a first for me, writing a post live in the WordPress website. Normally, I write things in Word and then use the magic of copy and paste.
Today is the first day of my summer holiday, and my annual detox fortnight. Usually, when you hear the word detox it’s food or drink related, but in my case, I’m staying away from a computer for the next two weeks.
I seemingly spend all of my time on a computer. The first thing I do when I get up in the morning is check my phone, then I spend my working day sitting in front of a computer screen. When I get home, for the sake of variety, I spend most of my evening either watching TV or my lovely curved computer monitor.
For the next two weeks all I will be doing is switching on my phone once a day to make sure that the world hasn’t ended whilst I’m off enjoying myself. I have also removed my work email from my phone for the duration.
I first did this a couple of years ago, not from any great need, but because I was going on a cruise, and as a cheapskate, I didn’t want to pay an exorbitant amount for a crappy connection. By the end of the trip, I realised that I was more relaxed and I felt that my batteries had recharged. The holiday was good, but it wasn’t just that, it was that I wasn’t obsessing over things that I couldn’t control.
In the years since, it has been something that I look forward to. Two weeks for me to stop and watch the world go by, and an opportunity to catch up on all of the reading that I should be doing. I’m spending a couple of days at the seaside, but other than that, the most exciting thing I’m doing is meeting friends.
One consequence is that I won’t be putting up any new posts for the duration. I was going to have a couple of things pre-written, but sometimes life (and work) gets in the way. So, the site will be holding station for the time being.
Anyway, if you will excuse me I’m off to the seaside to see if I can go on a donkey ride.
Bye for now.
